My Dance Story

When creating my dance, I wanted to capture the fun, social, curious nature of the otter. The dance flow follows depicts a day in the life of an otter including waking up and stretching before immediately inviting friends to come play. The dance then follows a movement journey which imitates an otter sliding in the mud and playing in the water before ending with a graceful float.

Reflections:

I chose this arts task specifically to put myself out of my comfort zone. I love to dance but have never before attempted to create a dance and had very little insight into how what goes into choreography. This task was incredibly fun and even more challenging for me. It really highlighted the importance of safe dance practices (including warming up)- I was quite sore the next day!

I found it hard to select music that matched the idea in my head, more so when choosing a slower tempo song and adjusting the dance to match the overall tone of this dance. The dance was created to the initial song ‘Mango’ and therefore fitting it into the ‘Clair De Lune’ was challenging. If I were to complete the activity again, I would focus more on creating more versatile and adjustable movements that can be tailored to multiple songs instead of targeting the dance to one song then making it fit for the second.
